US Capitol Building Hotels

Located at the top of Capitol Hill, the US Capitol Building is home to the US Congress, an important branch of the US Government. The design of the Capitol Building began with William Thornton and was later modified by other architects into what has become the Capitol Building. Congress only had two other capitol locations before the building was completed.

Travelers Guide To The US Capitol Building

The U. S. Capitol Building, with its distinctive dome, is one of the most recognizable buildings in the world. It is the seat of the U.S. government, where both houses of Congress meet.

The building’s original design and location were approved by George Washington himself. Construction began in 1793 and proceeded slowly due to shortages of money and skilled construction personnel. In 1814, British troops who were occupying Washington D.C. set a fire that gutted the still incomplete structure. After that restoration work, construction and design changes continued to accommodate the needs of a growing country and legislature. The famous dome was not part of the first design but was added to be more in scale with the larger building than the original smaller, flatter dome. It was completed in 1863. Over the years, there have been more changes, including the underground U.S. Capitol Visitor Center which opened in 2008.

The Visitor Center is open from 8:30 to 4:30 Monday through Saturday. The center includes interactive exhibits, documents and artifacts from the history of the U.S. Congress. Tours of the Capitol are available and visitors with passes are allowed in the galleries when the House of Representatives and the Senate are in session. The National Statuary Hall within the Capitol features 100 statues of famous Americans, two from each state.

The Capitol Building shares Capitol Hill, which is, in fact, a hill overlooking the National Mall, with several other government buildings, including the Library of Congress and Congressional office buildings. The grounds of Capitol Hill were designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, who also designed New York City’s Central Park, in the late nineteenth century. Part of the complex includes the U.S. Botanic Garden which has been in continuous operation since 1850.

Capitol Hill is also the name of the neighborhood in which the Capitol is located. It is a historic residential district, one of the oldest in the city. Its many restaurants are frequented by legislators, lobbyists and government staffers.
