History

Getting Around
Traffic in downtown is bad, so avoid driving if possible. It is also not possible to explore everything in downtown by foot. So the best way to get around is by using the public train provided by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA). The metro system in Downtown Washington D.C. is rated as one of the best in the world for being on time. In addition, it is also one of the cleanest. Train stations are available every few miles, so it is easy to find one. You should also buy a day pass or weekly pass for unlimited travel. Note that a day pass can not be used during peak hour, which is between 5-9:30 AM and 3-7 PM on weekdays.

Popular Attractions
Washington Monument: A 555 foot high landmark that is shaped like an obelisk. It has an observation deck for far viewing of the surrounding downtown areas. Tickets are free, but require advanced pickup. Tickets can also be reserved online but there is a service charge.
Washington National Cathedral: It is ranked as one of the top 10 largest Cathedral in the world, and it is free to visit.
Lincoln Memorial: A 19 foot high statue of President Abraham Lincoln. No tickets are required for this attraction.
White House: A reservation is required to tour the White House, but it is free of charge.
Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History: Has many exhibitions including nature, evolution, and space. It also has a variety of IMAX shows that start every 30-60 minutes. All exhibitions are free except for the IMAX.
Smithsonian National Zoo: Many exhibitions to explore at the zoo. Avoid visiting the zoo during winter since many animals are removed from the exhibitions. There is no entrance fee for the zoo.
