The Walter E. Washington Convention Center is in downtown Washington, D.C. It opened at its present location in 2003 as the Washington Convention Center. It was renamed the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in 2007 in honor of Washington, D.C.’s first elected mayor. The original Washington Convention Center opened in 1983 a block away from the present center’s location.

The Washington Convention Center has exhibit halls and rooms that will hold small groups of approximately 50 people or large groups of 35,000 people. Three exhibit halls in the center can be combined to create a space of 473,000 square feet. Food service options in the building include concession stands, a food court, a café and a restaurant. There are four floors in the convention center. Freight elevators are available to move heavy furniture and equipment.

This convention center can be reached by taking a Green Line or Yellow Line Metro train to the Mount Vernon Square 7th Street-Convention Center Station. Visitors can take the Yellow Line to the center from Ronald Reagan National Airport. People who take Amtrak to Union Station in Washington can take the Metro Red Line from Union Station to the Gallery Place Metro station. They can transfer to the Green Line or the Yellow Line at Gallery Place.

Hotels less than half a mile from the Washington Convention Center include the Embassy Suites, the Willard InterContinental and the Four Points by Sheraton.

Convention center visitors will find a variety of restaurants in the area. The Morrison-Clark Restaurant serves duck, lamb and scallops for dinner. The First Cup Café is open for breakfast every day. A variety of coffee drinks are available at Caribou Coffee and Starbucks. Cosi has sandwiches, salads and pizza on the menu.

The White House is less than a mile from the Washington Convention Center. Washington attractions that can be reached by taking the Metro from the center include the Washington Monument, the Smithsonian Museums, the National Zoo, the United States Botanic Garden and Arlington National Cemetery.
