Pentagon / Arlington Cemetery Hotels

The Pentagaon and Arlington Cemetery are located in Arlington, Virginia, across the Potomac River from Washington DC. Today, Arlington Cemetery remains the burial site of over 290,000 people. On the southeast side of Arlington Cemetery lies the Pentagon, the headquarters of the US Department of Defense. Here we find one of the most architecturally unique buildings in Washington DC.

The Pentagon And Surrounding Area

The Pentagon in Washington, D.C. is one of the largest office buildings in the world. As the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense, the building gets its name from its five sides all of which contain five corridors, or rings, lined with offices. More than 23,000 military and civilian employees work at the well-known landmark.

With the approval of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, ground was broken to begin construction on the Pentagon on September 11, 1941, to centralize personnel and erase a chronic shortage of office space. Less than two years later in January 1943, the Army Corps of Engineers finished construction on the innovative five-story concrete building that covers more than 29 acres. Sixty years after construction begun, the Pentagon was damaged when a plane crashed into it during the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and 189 people lost their lives at the site. Today the victims are honored by an outdoor memorial park.

The Pentagon is located in Arlington, Virginia, southwest of Washington, D.C. To the north near the Potomac River is Arlington National Cemetery, the military burial ground which is home to the Tomb of the Unknown Solider and other notable burials including the grave of President John F. Kennedy. Pentagon City, another popular tourist attraction, is also nearby and offers shopping at the Pentagon City Mall as well as restaurants and other stores. The Pentagon and its near-by attractions are easily accessible via Metro, the city’s subway system. The Pentagon is just a quick subway train ride from other places of interest in the nation’s capital, such as the monuments on the Mall, the Smithsonian Museums, the White House, and the United States Capitol building.

Group tours of the Pentagon are available for visitors on weekdays. Guides narrate about the branches of the military, the Department of Defense, and the building itself during the hour-long tours. Reservations are required and must be made at least one week, but not more than three months, in advance. Visitors are subject to a security screening and may not take photographs or make video or audio recordings.
